Frequently Asked Questions
How Often Should You Visit for Oral Health Services?
Quality dental care is an essential aspect of maintaining not just a sparkling smile but your overall dental health. To ensure your teeth and gums remain in optimal condition, regular check-ups with a very dedicated dentist are crucial. At Casey Dentists, we recommend visiting our dentist at least twice a year for a routine examination and cleaning. This frequency allows us to monitor any changes or issues and address them before they escalate. However, individual needs may vary, and for some, more frequent visits might be necessary. Always consult with our dentist to determine the best schedule for your unique oral health needs.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, known medically as “periodontal disease,” is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It’s primarily caused by bacteria found in dental plaque, a sticky substance formed when bacteria combine with food particles and saliva.
Gum disease occurs in two main stages:
- Gingivitis: This initial stage is characterised by redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums, often during brushing or flossing. Gingivitis results from inadequate dental hygiene. Luckily, with proper care and professional cleaning, the damage is reversible at this point.
- Periodontitis: If left unaddressed, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. This advanced stage involves the gums and bone pulling away from teeth, forming pockets that collect debris and can become infected. As bacteria spread and plaque grows beneath the gum line, the immune system fights back. Over time, connective tissues and bones holding teeth in place can deteriorate, potentially leading to tooth loss.
Factors that increase the risk of gum disease encompass inadequate oral hygiene, smoking, genetic predisposition, pregnancy, diabetes, and specific medications. Consistent dental check-ups and diligent oral care habits like regular brushing and flossing considerably diminish the likelihood of gum disease development.
What Precautions Should You Take With Dental Implants?
After undergoing the dental implant procedure, it’s crucial to remember that while these implants are robust and mimic natural teeth, they still require particular care, especially during the initial healing process. Firstly, avoid any direct force or pressure on the newly implanted area. This involves avoiding hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that might harm or loosen the implant. Additionally, in the initial days, it’s advisable to avoid using straws, as the sucking motion could disrupt the surgical site.
In the long run, oral hygiene remains paramount. Even though dental implants are not susceptible to cavities in the same way natural teeth are, the surrounding gum tissue can still become inflamed or infected if not cleaned adequately. Refrain from using tobacco products or smoking, as they can hinder the healing process and adversely affect the lifespan of your implant. Lastly, ensure you maintain regular dental check-ups so your dentist can monitor the health and stability of your implant and the surrounding tissues.
Note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
