It is needed when the maxillary sinuses sit too close to the upper jaw, leaving insufficient bone height to place an implant without risk of entering the sinus cavity.

During the procedure, a small window is created in the bone of the upper jaw. The sinus membrane is gently elevated, and bone graft material is placed in the newly created space between the jaw and the sinus floor. Over the following months, this material integrates with the natural bone, increasing the bone height available for implant placement.

In some cases, it may be possible to place the implant at the same time as the sinus lift. In others, a separate healing period is required first. Your dentist will assess your bone height and anatomy before advising which approach is appropriate for you.

 

What Is a Bone Graft and How Does It Differ?

A bone graft is a broader procedure that adds bone material to any area of the jaw where bone volume is insufficient. It is not specific to the upper jaw or the sinus region. A sinus lift is technically a type of bone graft, but one that specifically addresses the sinus anatomy of the upper jaw.

Bone graft material may be sourced from four main origins: your own body (an autograft, which integrates well but requires a second surgical site), a human donor source (an allograft), animal-derived bone such as bovine bone (a xenograft, which provides a scaffold for new bone growth), or synthetic materials. In the upper jaw, the proximity of the maxillary sinuses creates an additional constraint: there is often less vertical bone height in the molar and premolar region than in other areas, even before significant resorption has occurred.

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure and, like any surgery, carries risks. The most common complication is perforation of the sinus membrane during the elevation step. A 2024 PLOS ONE systematic review analysed 2,168 lateral sinus lift procedures and found an overall membrane perforation rate of 19%. Small perforations can often be managed during the procedure; larger ones may require the surgery to be paused and rescheduled.

Other potential complications include swelling, excessive bleeding, nasal congestion, and post-operative sinus infection. Some patients experience increased pain or discomfort during the healing period. Your dentist will explain the specific risks relevant to your anatomy before proceeding.

Most patients experience swelling, some discomfort, and minor bruising in the days after surgery. These symptoms are a normal part of the healing response and typically begin to improve within the first week.
